Armstrong Names Associate Provost for Student Engagement and Success

(Nov. 19, 2013) – Armstrong Atlantic State University recently named Dr. Delana Gajdosik-Nivens associate provost for student engagement and success. In her new position, Dr. Gajdosik-Nivens will work with the provost to provide leadership for undergraduate academic programs and initiatives designed to foster student success, engagement, retention and graduation. These programs include the Academic Orientation and Advisement Center, the Honors Program, the First-Year Experience, International Programs and other student success strategies.

A dedicated professor, administrator and scientist, Dr. Gajdosik-Nivens previously served as assistant dean of Armstrong's College of Science and Technology and as a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. She originally joined the university in 2000 and was named assistant dean of the College of Science and Technology in 2010. Over the years, she has helped promote undergraduate research and innovative chemical education pedagogies through numerous external grants.

Dr. Gajdosik-Nivens's career has been defined by a commitment to science and research. She earned a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of South Carolina in 1998 and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh in 1993. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering, in Washington D.C.

An accomplished researcher, Dr. Gajdosik-Nivens has mentored more than 50 undergraduate research students and secured more than $3 million in grants during her tenure at Armstrong. Dr. Gajdosik-Nivens has served as principal investigator on significant awards such as the National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Fellows Program Grant and the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Expansion Program (STEP). She has also served as a co-principal investigator or evaluator on numerous grants focused on improving science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.

Dr. Gajdosik-Nivens's research areas include nanotechnology, environmental chemistry (including the fate, analysis and monitoring of toxins in the environment) as well as student-centered chemical education. She is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society and the Georgia Academy of Science.
