Armstrong Learning Commons Takes Top Honor in Atlanta
(March 5, 2014) — The Georgia chapter of the U.S Green Building Council recently honored Armstrong Atlantic State University's Learning Commons expansion at the High Performance Healthy Schools Recognition Day in Atlanta. The LEED Gold-certified project, which reflects Armstrong's ongoing commitment to sustainable design and green building principles, was honored at a special luncheon on January 29.
“We're delighted to be recognized for our commitment to promoting sustainability and healthy environments to learn on campus,” said David Carson, Armstrong's vice president for business and finance. “We want to lead by example and to underscore the importance of environmental responsibility at Armstrong.”
The Learning Commons renovation recently won a 2013 Innovation Award from the University System of Georgia. The award, which is presented annually to outstanding University System of Georgia institutions, recognizes Armstrong's excellence in the Design category.
The Learning Commons opened on May 20, 2013 as an extension of Armstrong's Lane Library. The 13,000-square-foot building provides students with flexible learning spaces designed for both group and individual study. The environment encourages collaborative learning and provides access to state-of-the-art technology for access to and creation of digital materials.
Cogdell & Mendrala Architects, P.C. served as the lead architectural firm for the renovation project. The construction manager was Garbutt/Christman, LLC.
The building housing the Learning Commons was originally constructed on the main quadrangle at Armstrong in 1965 as the Campus Student Center. The building was expanded in the 1980s with the addition of a bookstore and was renovated again in the 1990s to house the university's Information Technology Services division.
In October of 2013, Armstrong's Learning Commons earned LEED Gold certification, recognizing the university's commitment to sustainable design and green building principles. Sustainable design components at the Learning Commons include energy-efficient mechanical systems, solar photovoltaic panels, a green roof garden and sustainable building materials.
