Armstrong Promotes Melody Rodríguez to Director of Lumina Program

(July 16, 2014) — Melody Rodríguez, the long-time director of Armstrong State University's Hispanic Outreach & Leadership at Armstrong (HOLA) program, was recently promoted to director of the Lumina Foundation's Community Partnership for Attainment program in Savannah.

Rodríguez will continue to be based at Armstrong and will lead Savannah's initiative to support post-secondary education completion and workforce development through the Community Partnership for Attainment (CPA) grant supported by Lumina Foundation.

Lumina Foundation's collaborative initiative unites public and private partners to increase the percentage of Americans with postsecondary degrees and credentials to 60 percent by the year 2025. Savannah is one of 35 U.S. communities selected for key funding, resources and tools to support strategic workforce development through postsecondary education.

As the HOLA program director at Armstrong, Rodríguez secured critical grant funding for scholarships to help attract and retain Hispanic/Latino students. Under her leadership, Armstrong doubled its Latino population and secured more than $70,000 in grants to sponsor cultural and educational programs focusing on underserved Hispanic populations. In addition, she helped secure nearly $2 million in scholarship funding from The Goizueta Foundation to help area Latino students pursue a college education.

Rodríguez joined Armstrong in 2001 and has previously been honored as one of Georgia Trend's rising leaders under the age of 40 and one of Diverse Issues in Higher Education's Top 25 Women in Higher Education. In March, the Global Women's Summit presented her with a Women Who Rock Award.

Originally from Merida, Venezuela, Rodríguez earned an M.Ed. in Adult Education, a B.A. in Spanish and a B.A. in Political Science from Armstrong.
