Police Department Wins Top Award for Cyber Forensics Work

(August 1, 2014) — The Armstrong State University Police Department won the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police Motorola/Dr. Curtis McClung Award of Excellence Award at a special reception held at the Westin Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga. on July 29.

The Armstrong Police Department was honored for the Cyber Forensics Division's innovation, lasting impact on the community and cooperation among multiple agencies. The university's Police Chief Wayne Willcox accepted the award on behalf of the department. Armstrong was one of 11 public agencies to be nominated for the award.

“This award is a major honor for Armstrong,” said Armstrong Police Department Chief Wayne Willcox. “Our department is deeply grateful to receive this statewide recognition for our ongoing cyber forensics work.”

The Armstrong Police Department's Cyber Security Research Institute was founded in 2006 as part of the university's continuing efforts to address the growing cyber security education needs of law enforcement, criminal justice and intelligence professionals. Today, the state-of-the-art facility is the only university digital forensics lab operating 24/7, including weekends and holidays.

In April, Armstrong was featured as one of the “7 Top Cybercrime & E-Discovery Certificate Programs” on the Forensics Colleges list of outstanding universities offering cutting-edge Cybercrime and E-Discovery Certificate programs.

Armstrong launched the only program of its kind in the region dedicated to digital forensics and law enforcement techniques for online crime detection in the fall of 2013. This flexible graduate-level program appeals to working adults, enabling professionals to earn graduate certification while working full-time and advancing their careers.

The online interdisciplinary graduate certificate offers the tools and techniques to conduct high-tech cyber investigations. This program is designed to prepare graduates for federal, state and local government positions, as well as jobs in the private sector.
