Professors & Director Serve as International Evaluators in the Czech Republic
(June 18, 2015) — Armstrong professors of criminal justice, social and political science José de Arimatéia da Cruz and Becky da Cruz and Director of International Education Jim Anderson recently served as international evaluators at the National Science Exposition sponsored by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
The exposition served as an opportunity for 75 high school students to share the results of their scientific research with middle and high school students from the Prague area. Students involved in the program were selected through a highly competitive process and then matched with a mentor professor from a nearby university. Each student spent one to two years working closely with the mentor professor to conduct research and to prepare for public presentations.
At the exposition, which attracted more than 5,000 students, teachers, parents and members of the general public over the course of three days, José de Arimatéia da Cruz, Becky da Cruz and Jim Anderson, spoke with teachers, professors, students and visitors about the quality of the exposition organization, logistics, public presentations and appropriateness of the location and venue as a part of their international evaluator duties. They completed and submitted a report of their findings, including recommendations for the second annual event to be held in 2016.
In addition to this evaluation, all three Armstrong representatives provided two-hour presentations each day of the conference to participating student researchers. Topics included university studies, study abroad and learning about different cultures.
“The experience further expanded the influence of Armstrong's international programs in Central Europe in a number of ways,” said Anderson. “We're excited to see how this positively impacts the university in the future.”
