University to Celebrate Latino Heritage Week September 19-26
(September 17, 2014) — Armstrong State University will host Latino Heritage Week from Friday, September 19 through Friday, September 26, offering a variety of events that are free and open to the public.
Each year, Armstrong's Hispanic Outreach and Leadership at Armstrong (HOLA) program organizes a calendar of events celebrating Latino culture. All events take place on Armstrong's Savannah campus at 11935 Abercorn St.
The full schedule is as follows:
Friday, Sept. 19
Hispanic Flamenco Ballet
7 – 9 p.m.
Fine Arts Auditorium
Kick off Latino Heritage Week with Hispanic Flamenco Ballet, a traditional dance performance by the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet Dance Company. Enjoy the rhythm of flamenco while getting a taste of Latino culture.
Monday, Sept. 22
4 – 5 p.m.
Student Union Plaza
Come party with HOLA at the Student Union, while enjoying food and music from all over Latin America.
Tuesday, Sept. 23
Movie Night: “Under the Same Moon”
7 – 10 p.m.
HOLA will host a special film screening of Under the Same Moon, directed by Patricia Riggen and starring Adrian Alonso and Kate del Castillo. Under the Same Moon tells the story of a young boy named Carlitos, whose mother Rosario works illegally in the United States to provide for him. Their distance creates many obstacles, but they know they'll be reunited soon enough.
Wednesday, Sept. 24
“The Cuban Guy” Motivational Speaker
6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Savannah Union Ballroom
Get motivated with Andres Lara, also known as “The Cuban Guy.” At 16, Lara left Cuba with no money, no home and no prospects. But just 10 years later, at the age of 26, he's an author, CEO of his own company and a millionaire.
Thursday, Sept. 25
6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Student Union Ballroom B/C
Dance the evening away at Salsa Night while learning a few Latin dance moves.
Friday, Sept. 26
6 – 9 p.m.
Wrap up the week's festivities with a picnic on the intramural field lawn, including hamburgers and hot dogs.
