Mr. Howard Cohen is a Savannah native who graduated from Benedictine Military School. He then enrolled at Armstrong, receiving his Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts in 1954 and his Master of Education in 1972. Mr. Cohen also completed his Bachelor of Science in Math at Georgia Southern University.

After graduating from Armstrong, Cohen enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for two years during the Korean Conflict. From there, he opened a local weightlifting gym in Savannah and the rest is history. Mr. Cohen has received numerous awards in weightlifting, including the National Masters Weightlifting Championship 30 times, World Masters Weightlifting Championship seven times, and the World Games three times. He has been inducted into the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame, Jewish Alliance Hall of Fame, USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame, National Masters Hall of Fame, and World Masters Hall of Fame. Mr. Cohen is also the only person to win the Mr. Georgia Physique title twice.

On top of his prestigious weightlifting career, Mr. Cohen was a schoolteacher for the Savannah-Chatham Public School System for 30 years. He received the STAR Teacher Award five times, as well as county STAR teacher once.

Mr. Cohen is married to the love of his life, Carol, and they have three children and six grandchildren.
