Lines was a member of Armstrong's inaugural class in 1937. As a student, he helped to choose the school colors and served as editor of the student newspaper, The Inkwell, and the Armstrong yearbook, The Geechee. He went on to serve in WWII and graduate from Emory University. He initiated a law case that made it to the Georgia Supreme Court in 1996, which gave Georgians ownership of all beaches.
